Body sugaring is an ancient hair removal method originating from the Middle East and North Africa. A natural paste made from sugar, lemon and water is applied to the skin and removed using a hand-flicking technique — extracting hair from the root in the natural direction of growth. It's gentler than waxing, leaves no residue, and skin feels genuinely soft and clean immediately after treatment.
No — and the difference matters. Both remove hair from the root, but the technique, ingredients, and results are meaningfully different. Wax adheres to both hair and live skin cells and is removed against the direction of growth. Sugar paste adheres to hair only and is removed with the direction of growth. Less trauma, less irritation, better results over time.
Three reasons. First, the paste doesn't adhere to live skin cells — only hair — so there's no pulling of the skin itself. Second, hair is removed in the direction of natural growth, which means less trauma to the follicle and less breakage. Third, sugar paste works at body temperature — no heat involved, no risk of burning sensitive skin.
At least 2mm — roughly 10-14 days after your last shave, or 4 weeks after your last sugaring or waxing session. This is one of sugaring's key advantages over waxing, which typically requires at least 6mm of growth.
Arrive with clean, dry skin. Avoid applying lotions, oils, or moisturisers on the day of your appointment. Exfoliate gently the day before — not the day of — to remove dead skin cells and help the paste grip the hair more effectively. Avoid sun exposure immediately before treatment.
Sugar, lemon and water. That's it. No chemicals, no resins, no synthetic additives. 100% natural and safe for all skin types.
Lukewarm — at or slightly above body temperature. There is no risk of burning your skin. This also makes it more comfortable in Bali's climate, where skin is already warm.
No. The sugar paste is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic — it doesn't block pores. Because it contains no synthetic chemicals or resins, it's one of the safest hair removal options for sensitive skin. Clients with eczema, rosacea-prone skin, or those who react badly to waxing typically find sugaring significantly more comfortable.
No — when done correctly, sugaring reduces ingrown hairs compared to waxing. Ingrowns are primarily caused by hair breakage, which occurs when hair is removed against the direction of growth. Because sugaring removes hair with the direction of growth, breakage is minimised. Our therapists also advise on pre and post-care to keep ingrowns from developing.
Yes. Fresh paste is prepared for every client and discarded after use — there is no double dipping, no cross-contamination. The ingredients are 100% natural. HiSUGARS follows the highest hygiene standards across all four studios. Sugaring is also environmentally friendly — the paste is fully biodegradable.
Some redness immediately after treatment is completely normal — it's a natural skin reaction to hair being removed from the follicle. With correct aftercare, this typically disappears within 1.5-2 hours. Avoid heat, sun exposure, and tight clothing for 24 hours after treatment.
Generally 4-6 weeks, depending on the body area, your individual hair growth rate, and how regularly you sugar. With consistent treatment, hair grows back finer and sparser over time. Regular sugaring weakens the hair follicle, and for some clients eventually leads to permanent reduction.
For areas below the waist, every 4 weeks is ideal. Underarms may need more frequent treatment — every 2-3 weeks. Arms and upper body areas typically grow more slowly. Your therapist will advise based on your hair growth during your appointment.
Yes — this is one of sugaring's key advantages over waxing. Sugaring can treat hair as short as 2mm, which is roughly 10-14 days after your last shave. With waxing you'd need to wait 3-4 weeks. If you've shaved recently before your Bali trip and think you can't get treated — you probably can. When in doubt, WhatsApp us before booking and we'll confirm.
Generally yes — sugaring is one of the safest hair removal options during pregnancy because it uses only natural ingredients with no chemicals or resins. However we always recommend consulting your doctor or midwife first, particularly during the first trimester. Skin can be more sensitive during pregnancy, so let your therapist know when booking so they can adjust the treatment accordingly.
For the first 24-48 hours after your treatment:
• Avoid direct sun exposure and sunbeds
• Avoid heat — saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs
• Avoid tight clothing on treated areas
• Avoid swimming pools and the sea
• Avoid applying perfumed products, deodorants or lotions to treated areas
• Avoid exercise that causes heavy sweating
After 48 hours, gently exfoliate the treated area 2-3 times per week to prevent ingrown hairs and keep skin smooth between sessions.
