THE DANGER OF DIY HOME WAXING & SUGARING

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

Why It Is Better to Have Your Treatments Done in The Salon

Salon services (as waxing in salon or sugaring in salon) sound like an enjoyable experience to many people and a horrifying experience to others. It certainly creates a more luxurious experience for hair removal treatments, but they also require you to plan ahead and your willingness to expose yourself to a complete stranger, if you are getting a bikini or Brazilian treatment. On the other hand, waxing at home may seem like a scary task to those of you who have never tried it, especially if you have never waxed before. There are of course advantages and disadvantages to both options, but if you have ever wondered to do a hair removal treatment at home, there are a few things you need to consider.

Ingrown hair

The first thing you should keep in mind is that professionals who are doing waxing or sugaring services have been trained properly. They know what they are doing and will ensure that the hairs are removed in the correct way with minimal chance of breaking the hairs (snapped hair gives a messy result). Besides that, professional techniques also minimize the chance of ingrown hairs developing. Because of this, they should be able to complete the treatments very quickly and relatively painlessly.

Sugaring treatment also requires a special skill called hand-flicking technique. It works by applying the sugar paste on the opposite direction of hair growth and removing it on the same direction of hair growth. It may sounds easy to do sugaring at home but to actually do it right, you need professional training. Any improper techniques during hair removal treatment often cause ingrown hairs and irritation to the skin.

Sticky mess and burned skin

Home waxing kits are widely available and easy to get, which is of course an advantage. But when you try to do waxing at home, you should know that wrong techniques can bring a disaster to your skin. For example when you’re applying a hot or warm wax, the wax can get sticky, gooey and unremovable, mostly when it is applied to an area with longer hairs. That’s because anything that increases body heat can increase the sticky factor of the wax. Additionally when the wax is applied in the wrong way, it can result to a very messy situation and even create the perfect hot waxing storm.

Although there are home waxing kits that do not require heating, you probably have a better luck with wax that is applied directly to the skin, especially when you have coarse, thick, or difficult hair type. If you are not used to the technique, you’ll likely remove the top layer of live skin cells with the hair and burn your skin. This will result in redness, irritation, or even worse, infection.

Sugaring hair removal might save you from having a nightmare of burned skin because it’s heated in a lukewarm temperature. But when you do sugaring at home, that doesn’t warranty you to have a pleasant experience because you might do the techniques incorrectly. When you don’t have a thorough training on how to do sugaring in the right way, chances are you’ll spend a lot of time tugging and pulling the sugar paste to get it off your skin. This pulling and tugging is not only mentally stressful, it puts a great deal of stress on the skin and can cause severe damage.

Hygiene

Another good thing about going to the special waxing salon or sugaring salon is the therapist will also make sure that your skin is cleaned properly before and after the treatments. You don’t need to worry about any residual wax or sugar paste that stick into your skin, because they have a better sight especially in your back, bikini, and buttocks area. The therapists also have all necessary tools cleaned, sterilized, and ready to use, i.e. antiseptic, disinfectant, bed sheet, etc. That being said, you can keep the risk of adverse reaction and infection to a minimum.

As you can see, home waxing or sugaring isn’t as simple as it sounds. It requires more efforts, can be messy as well as painful. While salons can offer quick services without much pain and very little hassle. If you want to be safe and have a superior, healthy, hairless skin, then of course going to the salon is the best option :)
